Our Story

Caring. Serving. Moving Forward.

At Harbor House, we believe in creating a safe, welcoming space for those who have been pushed to the margins — a place where individuals can be seen, heard, and embraced. Our mission is rooted in the belief that no one is too far gone, too broken, or too lost to find hope, healing, and purpose again.

We are a Christian nonprofit based in Torrington, Connecticut, born from a deep conviction to care for our neighbors in tangible, life-giving ways. The name “Harbor House” represents what we offer — a place of refuge and peace, a spiritual harbor in the storm, where people can rest and begin their journey forward with dignity and support.

A Heart for Our Community

Founders John and Anne Busa have called Torrington home for over 30 years. Their lives have been marked by faithful service in the name of Jesus — from the Chaplain’s department at the local hospital, to leading Bible studies, to organizing community and outreach events and drop-in ministries for the unhoused. When two of the city’s only drop-in centers closed their doors, John and Anne felt a new call: to build something lasting that meets both the physical and spiritual needs of those facing homelessness and hardship.

That call became Harbor House of Litchfield County, Inc.

Caring with Compassion

Caring is more than an emotion — it’s an action. At Harbor House, care looks like a hot shower, clean laundry, a quiet place to rest, or a warm cup of coffee. It looks like a conversation without judgment, a friend who remembers your name, or help navigating next steps. We care because Jesus first cared for us, and because every person who walks through our doors is made in His image and worthy of love.

Serving with Purpose

We serve because we are called to follow the example of Christ — who came not to be served, but to serve. Our volunteers give their time, talents, and hearts to provide essential services like hygiene care, mail access, computers for job searching and communication, and referrals to mental health, medical, and social services. But more than that, they offer consistency, kindness, and connection in a world that often withholds all three.

Moving Forward with Hope

Harbor House is not just a place to stay still — it’s a place to begin again. Whether it’s through finding employment, reconnecting with family, growing in faith, or simply discovering a sense of belonging, we believe in the power of progress — one small step at a time. We walk with people, not ahead of them.

Our Foundation

We are a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit, sustained entirely by the generosity of those who believe in our mission. Every donation, prayer, and hour volunteered helps keep the doors open and the lights on — literally and spiritually. As we move forward in faith, our prayer is that Harbor House will not only be a haven of rest, but a launching place of purpose.
